We had a chance to catch up with Charleston Artists Scott and Kaye Penegar recently. Madeline Dukes joined us for the interview on location at Paradiso North Charleston. We had some great conversation about art and the art business as well as some very interesting stories.
Kaye Penegar:
After an early strong interest and lessons in art, Kaye graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Art. She subsequently worked in Charleston and then moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico where she studied with Jan D'Esopo. She later travelled Europe for six months where she studied artists who had influenced her career. A prolific painter, Kaye is currently focusing on acrylics. She is known for her handling of light and color. Kaye also sculpts award winning works and paints murals and has received numerous commissions.

Scott Penegar:
Scott was voted Best Local Artist in Charleston by the Charleston City Paper for 2024!
Sculpture and painter Scott Dixson Penegar received his art degree in 1984 from Appalachian State University . Following graduation he moved to Morehead City N.C. and worked as a commercial fisherman and as an exhibit designer for the North Carolina Aquarium. He next moved to Charleston, S.C. and became a eco tour guide at Kiawah Island while studying marine biology at the College of Charleston. Scott married fellow artist Kaye in 1988 and continued his art career where his main focus was on welded sculpture and oil painting. In 1992 Scott and his wife moved to the Caribbean where he studied with the prominent artist Jan D'Esopo. There he worked in sculpture, bronze casting. While living in San Juan he worked on many commissioned pieces including two large bronzes that are in the Puerto Rican capital building. Scott's art is heavily influenced by his passion for the sea.

Scott "Doc" Varn and Preservation Through Art – Charleston.

Tuesday Jul 16, 2024
We talked with Scott about the “Preservation Through Art – Charleston” show at the City Gallery of Charleston,
July 19th through September 8th, 2024.
This is a unique “then and now” exhibition to raise awareness for local preservation. The non-profit organization, Preserving A Picturesque America (PAPA), will
conduct a sale of art pieces in the exhibition to benefit community partners and their preservation efforts in the Charleston area.

Scott Varn, founder and Executive Director of Preserving A Picturesque America (PAPA), is an artist and longtime conservationist. Some years ago, while searching for prints depicting his home area of Western North Carolina, he found
some classic engravings of the French Broad River at an online estate auction and ordered them. When they arrived, Scott was enamored with the scenes depicting landmarks along the river from nearly one hundred fifty years ago. However, disappointment ensued when he saw text on the reverse side, realizing they were removed from a book. Still the images were intriguing and the words on the back sparked a curiosity to learn more.
The words and images came from a publication titled Picturesque America which is the inspiration for the show.

At Firefly Distillery with Scott Newitt and Jim Irvin
Sunday Jul 07, 2024
Sunday Jul 07, 2024
We were lucky to be guests of Firefly and record the podcast in the main tasting room with the founders Scott and Jim.
Theirs's is a story that started off like any other. Two people met through work (the wine business), became friends, and then came up with a crazy idea to go into business together, but not the wine business, their idea was a bit more spirited. And so, Firefly was born.
Tucked away off the beaten path from downtown Charleston, a stone’s throw from the beautiful Noisette Creek, sits the newly constructed Firefly Distillery. Many of the materials used to build the elegant, barn-inspired space were taken from our roots on Wadmalaw Island, with elements purchased from local craftsmen or refurbished from a rustic barn.
Home of the world’s first Sweet Tea Vodka, Firefly continues to make great spirits. From our popular original vodkas to our maritime influenced bourbon, and lineup of 11 moonshine flavors, Firefly has grown to include more than 30 innovative spirits.

Friday May 17, 2024
We had a delightful and informative chat on everything about this year's award winning Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition (POSAE) with Mimi Whaley, Tate Nation and Madeline Dukes.
About the festival:
Marion Square is transformed into a beautiful open-air market as some of the finest and most creative local artists exhibit and sell their work. Stroll through the park and browse the artists’ tents as you view original oils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, encaustics, photography, and more. With daily demonstrations and all artists on hand to personally answer questions and show their artwork, the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition offers a memorable experience and a great way to enjoy the creativity of our local visual arts community whether you’re in the market for a new acquisition, or simply window shopping.
